happy birthday, Shirley Temple - every Saturday night of probably my entire nineteen years, I would listen to the song “Goodnight My Love,” always played at the end of Danny Stiles’ show on radio station WNYC. Danny was a friend of my mother’s and he was a lovely guy, so I think of him whenever I think of this song. Happy 84th, Shirley!
happy birthday, Brandon De Wilde - a wonderful actor who started out as an adorable child in dramas like The Member of the Wedding and Shane before moving on to more serious fare like Blue Denim, All Fall Down, Hud and In Harm’s Way, working with many of the best actors in the business. Brandon’s legacy will continue thanks to those classic films.
happy birthday, Asa Butterfield - he was wonderful as the title character in Hugo. I look forward to his next movie, Ender’s Game.
(and lol at him being taller than Scorsese)
happy birthday, Sean Astin - of course I love him in LOTR (even after all these years, I think of the “potatoes” line from The Two Towers), but I also grew up being a fan of The Goonies.
happy birthday, Chloë Grace Moretz - she was terrific in Hugo. A lot of it may have had to do with the British accent, but I thought she was genuinely lovely.
happy birthday, Peggy Ann Garner - the perfect young Jane in the 1943 version of Jane Eyre. Helen Burns is played here by another talented little lady: Elizabeth Taylor.
Top 9 Favorite Film Pictures → Jim Graham /Empire Of The Sun (1987)
saw it last night. I had problems with the screenplay and score but Christian Bale was terrific (of course).
happy birthday, Elijah Wood - of course I loved him as Frodo. =)
I’ve also seen The Good Son, which is kind of ridiculous but he’s good in that too.
happy birthday, Margaret O’Brien - aka Tootie in my childhood favorite, Meet Me in St. Louis. “Under the Bamboo Tree” was a song I loved as a kid, so I knew that had to be the clip I’d choose. Little Margaret was also the perfect Adèle in Jane Eyre. Happy 75th!
I sincerely hope he turns out to be a good-looking adult and not go the Elijah Wood route, which means treading the line between adorable and scary depending on the amount of facial hair (the more the better for EW, I say). But I guess that’s the difficulty with being a young actor with pretty, almost delicate features.
happy birthday Joseph Mazzello - proved himself as one of the best child actors of the 90s in Jurassic Park, The River Wild and The Cure. Nice to see that he keeps getting work, what with “The Pacific” and The Social Network.
